Introduction
About Us
The Bapco Modernization Programme (BMP) is poised to be one of the largest projects ever undertaken in the history of Bahrain, and for Bapco, this multi-billion dollar venture is the largest capital investment in its 90 year history. The BMP vision is driven by meeting the challenges of the future and leaving a lasting legacy, while its success is expected to have a multiplier effect.
OUR OBJECTIVE
BMP’s objectives are to increase refining capacity, enhance the product slate, improve the energy efficiency, and emerge as one of the most competitive and environmentally compliant refineries in the region. The BMP is essential for Bapco’s long-term sustainability, and provides a sound foundation for realising the Kingdom of Bahrain’s Vision 2030.
Refinery crude capacity increases from 267000 barrels per day (bpd) to 380,000 bpd.
The Resid Hydrockracking unit converts 78 per cent of lower grade feedstock into distillates which will then be refined into high margin diesel and kerosene.
Energy Efficiency Index improves through the combination of more efficient units and the decommissioning of older units
OUR SUCCESS
BMP’s success shall fundamentally be measured in terms of an incident and injury free project as well as by using the standard project metrics of cost and schedule management. In addition, it shall be the integrated BMP facilities starting up smoothly and running reliably until the first major Turnaround and Inspection (T&I) event.
OUR TEAM
Bapco (Project Owner) and Worley (Project Management Consultant) are fully engaged as an Integrated Project Management Team (IPMT). Engineering, Procurement & Construction (EPC), lump sum turnkey contracts has been awarded to TTSJV which is a joint venture between Technip FMC (Italy), Tecnicas Reunidas (TR) (Spain) and Samsung Engineering (South Korea).
The project directorate is in Rome with Operating Centers (OCs) located across Rome, Madrid, Seoul and Bahrain (the work has been split up between the Operating Centers). The overall project is managed from the Bahrain Operating Center (BOC).
SCOPE
The greenfield areas are previously undeveloped sites that have been specifically earmarked for the BMP construction project. Site preparation was carried out by Bapco prior to the EPC award, and was handed over to TTSJV in Q4 2018. There will be five (5) construction areas in the greenfield site.
The brownfield sites (Area 6) are situated within the battery limits of the existing refinery and are associated with existing refinery infrastructure such as, process units, transportation piping, storage tanks and the wharf.
